Christkindl Kaffeehaus
Information about the library's fundraiser during Mifflinburg's Christkindl Market.
Visit the Herr Memorial Library for a special treat during your visit to Mifflinburg’s annual Christkindl Market. Our friends from the Lawton-Chapman Agency of Mifflinburg have planned a delightful event to benefit the library.
Decorated for the season, the library will become a German-inspired Kaffeehaus complete with cozy café seating and coffee, tea, hot cocoa and sweets. Visitors are encouraged to sample the warm beverages and goodies in exchange for a small donation to the library.
As part of the Kaffeehaus, the Mifflinburg Area High School French Club will offer delicious homemade Yule logs.
The “Bûche de Noël,” or “Yule Log,” is a traditional French dessert served during the Christmas holidays. As the name indicates, the cake is generally prepared, presented, and garnished to look like a log ready for the fire. The traditional bûche is made from a sponge cake, which usually is baked in a large, shallow jelly-roll pan, frosted, rolled to form a cylinder, and frosted again on the outside.
Mifflinburg's Christkindl Market was inspired by the 700-year-old traditional German" Christkindl Markt," or Christ Child Market. The annual outdoor event is prepared by various area churches, organizations, schools, and residents. For three days, during the second full weekend of December, Mifflinburg's Market Street, with its many churches, is lined with outdoor huts featuring a wide variety of items such as handmade crafts and traditional holiday treats. Festive music is performed on outdoor stages and inside churches.
