Children's services & programs
The Herr Memorial Library offers young adult and children’s collections, books on tape and CD, magazines, videotapes, DVDs, reference materials, and special themed bags.
These canvas tote bags are filled with four to
nine books related by themes, subjects, or authors, as well as
laminated sheets of ideas for crafts, games, and other activities for
children who are preschool and elementary school ages. Some of
the subjects
available are “Winter,” “Presidents,” “Autumn,” and “Poetry.”
Three special theme bags are based on notebooks produced by the Mike Messina Foundation that promote healthy lifestyles for children. The notebooks were donated to the Herr Memorial Library by the Sunrise Rotary Club of Lewisburg and may be checked out with a valid library card.
Teachers, parents, and home-schoolers have been pleased with the themed bags, which may also be checked out. Newer selections include bags focusing on “Fire Prevention,” “Self Esteem,” and “Bullying.”
Most of the library’s special programs are designed to serve children, and these programs are consistently filled to capacity. During the school year, the library offers story times for infants, toddlers and preschoolers, reading clubs, proctoring of exams, and programs for home-schooled children.
In April 2004, the Herr Memorial Library was selected by the Pennsylvania Library Association to receive a “Best Practice Award” for small libraries for its “Baby Story Time.” The library also offers a summer reading program that annually serves more than 250 children. Funding from the Union County United Way supports the library’s story times and the Summer Reading Program.
