Recycling project teaches children, helps library
press release
Beginning Wed., Feb. 6, the Herr Memorial Library will join with Mifflinburg Area Elementary School to present a "Cartridges for Kids" recycling collection contest. The event, which was first held last year, was created to celebrate Earth Day and to help the community learn how recycling helps the environment.
Through April 17 each kindergarten, first, second, and third grade classrooms will have a container for students to fill with used ink cartridges and unwanted small electronic devices. At the end of the contest, the containers will be collected by library staff members who will count the number of usable items.
On Earth Day, Monday, April 22, contest winners will be announced. All students in the winning classroom for each grade will receive a prize from the library for their recycling efforts.
The goals of the project are to help children learn how they can recycle and how their efforts can help to preserve our environment by keeping harmful items out of landfills. The project also will raise funds to support children's programming at the library.
Parents, friends, and neighbors are urged to help students by donating used inkjet and laser printer and copier cartridges, as well as unwanted PDAs (like Blackberries), iPods, laptops, video systems and games, digital cameras, and cell phones, along with power cords and accessories. Complete lists of acceptable materials are available at the library.
