Herr Library to go to the bees on Aug. 7
press release
The staff at Mifflinburg's Herr Memorial Library is planning a Bee Day for all ages on Thurs., Aug. 7.
Story Times for infants and preschoolers will have a bee theme in the morning, and from 2 to 3 p.m. a Big Bee Benefit will promote fun and fundraising for honeybee research with a children’s penny auction. A family program at 7:15 p.m. will feature a honeybee presentation by Brenda Aucker.
The Big Bee Benefit is designed for children five years old and up. Participants are encouraged to bring two rolls of pennies, which library staff will exchange for tickets with a special number for each child.
While parents wait and watch from a “Silent Forest,” children will be able to choose from a variety of small prizes to bid on with their numbered tickets. All bidding tickets will be placed in a large bowl and drawings will be done for each prize.
During the Big Bee Benefit, monetary donations also will be accepted from parents and other honeybee supporters. All money raised will go to researchers at Penn State University who are trying to find out why large numbers of honeybees have been dying.
Beekeeper Brenda Aucker, a spokeswoman for the Pennsylvania State Beekeeper's Association, will give a free family presentation at the library beginning at 7:15 p.m. that includes a view of live honeybees and a honey tasting session.
Register to attend any Herr Library programs by calling 966-0831 or by visiting the library at 500 Market Street in Mifflinburg.
